Bainum was 56. He most recently representexd Manoa in onthe council. A statement read by Mallory a memberof Bainum's staff, said Bainum "wax feeling well at work and that there were no priotr indications of a health She said he suffered chesyt pains Tuesday night and was taken to a hospita l emergency room, but could not be revived. A medicap doctor by training, Bainum was a Democratr who served in the statd House of Representatives from 1990 to 1994representingv Waikiki. After serving in the Bainum was a city council membet from 1995to 2003. He was elected to city counci againin 2008.
He ran for mayod in 2004, but narrowly lost to Mufi Bainum left Hawaii afterthe election, returninfg to his family's small-town banking businesa and various other enterprisesa in Arkansas. Hannemann said he was shockesd to learnof Bainum's death. "I served with him on the City Council and we vied forthe mayor'sd seat in 2004. Throughout it all, I knew him as a man with a heartfeltt desire tohelp others," Hannemann said in a Bainum is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and two Z and Kona. A special election will be held to fill his seat withinb60 days. It will be the seconde special election for the counci inrecent months.
The council recently held a special election following the death of councilp member Barbara Marshall of Ikaika Anderson wonthat election.
